| “This is exactly what federal stimulus funding was designed to do,” said Senator Menendez. “A local organization receiving a federal investment, creating a training program that prepares area residents for full-time employment in green jobs which are in high demand, and assists homeowners with energy efficiency. It takes New Jerseyans off the unemployment lines, puts food on the table, and saves energy – a win-win situation for our state.” | ||||
This expanded state-of-the-art training facility will become functional in the Fall of 2010 at BCCAP’s facility at 535 Midland Avenue, Garfield. Training will be under the auspices of BCCAP’s NJ State-licensed vocational training school, approved by the NJ Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development to provide Weatherization training. Forty students will be trained annually. National certifications will be attainable and include OSHA, Lead Renovator and BPI (Building Performance Institute). Upon graduation, job placement will be a key component in this effort. |

Through Community Services Block Grant stimulus funding, BCCAP has already initiated a Weatherization Pilot training program that is providing four, six-week sessions. About to begin its fourth, and final, 6-week session, BCCAP’s Job Development unit has been working with the trainees to secure employment upon graduation. The new Weatherization Training Center will expand the current six-week program to ten weeks this Fall and will follow a nationally recognized DOE curriculum. “For over 40 years, Bergen County Community Action Partnership has been the leader in generating energy conservation in Bergen County,” said Bob Halsch, BCCAP Executive Director. “Community Action is excited about the Federal Government’s increased investment in weatherization and commitment to reduce energy costs for our residents.” |

BCCAP receives $5 million in stimulus funds to Weatherize over 600 homes
|
Creating jobs and cutting energy costs for working people while improving the economy Bergen County Community Action Partnership (BCCAP) is ready to invest $5 million dollars into the local Bergen County area economy. These federal stimulus funds will be used for weatherization work on the homes of qualified residents. Over 600 homes will receive weatherization services, which may include furnace repair/replacement, window replacement, attic, wall and foundation insulation, and safety inspections – all with the goal of reducing home fuel costs significantly. The program has also helped to create jobs in the community. Thanks to federal stimulus funding, BCCAP has hired and trained additional staff to get the job done. Halsch added that they’ve seen weatherization reduce household fuel costs an average of 20 to 25 percent. In some households, it has reduced utility bills by as much as $160 to $450 per heating season. In addition to helping the environment by lowering energy use, BCCAP puts a premium on providing “green” services as part of its work. Crews use cellulose insulation and recycle all building parts. Moreover, they use the latest diagnostic tools, such as blower doors, infrared cameras, and furnace testing instruments to verify the effectiveness of the work.
